Karen Wallace Engraving

After graduating from the Glasgow School of Art in 2006, Karen Wallace trained in fine jewellery. Inspired by calligraphy engraving, she apprenticed under master engraver Dr. Malcolm Appleby MBE from 2012 to 2019 and trained with Belgian Master Engraver Alain Lovenberg. Her expertise spans jewellery-making and engraving, with her work exhibited internationally, including at the SFO Museum. Since engraving her first gun for Dickson and MacNaughton in 2017, she has undertaken projects for John Rigby & Son, including the award-winning Jacques Cartier rifle cover.

Exhibited
internationally

Karen has skilfully integrated her jewellery-making and engraving talents, fostering her growth as both an artist and craftsman.  She was a key exhibitor at the inaugural Elements Silver Show in Edinburgh, where her “Elements” beaker was purchased by the esteemed Pearson Silver Collection and later exhibited at the SFO Museum in San Francisco from July 2018 to March 2019. Her work at the Goldsmiths Fair in London was well received, with most pieces being sold.

In 2017, Karen completed her first gun engraving for Dickson and MacNaughton, the Edinburgh gunsmiths.  Gun engraving has since become a significant aspect of her portfolio.  With additional training from Alain Lovenberg in traditional deep relief hand engraving and sculpting, Karen’s fascination with carving was born.

She has been fortunate to be supported and encouraged in this pursuit, undertaking exciting projects for John Rigby & Son, including carving the award-winning Jacques Cartier rifle cover.

As an active member of the Hand Engravers Association, Karen enjoys sharing skills, knowledge, and passion with a diverse group of peers.

Her engagement in the internationally renowned Dr. Malcolm Appleby Symposiums in Perthshire highlights this commitment.  Recently, with support from the Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust, Karen has taken on an apprentice, Annabel Hood, to whom she is keen to pass on her skills and knowledge.

After graduating from the Glasgow School of Art in 2006, Karen received training in fine jewellery at a prestigious diamond house in Glasgow.  Three years later, she founded Karen Wallace Jewellery, sharing a workshop with an experienced jeweller while also working part-time on a cattle farm, driving a large blue tractor around the South Lanarkshire countryside.

During this time, she was inspired by a calligraphy hand engraver to pursue engraving.  This led her to master engraver Dr. Malcolm Appleby MBE, under whom she apprenticed from 2012 to early 2019.  Karen also received training from Belgian Master Engraver Alain Lovenberg.
